GuiZhou province lies in the northeast part of the yungui plateau, abbreviated as qian or gui. it covers 170,000 square kilometers and has a population of 35 million. the polyethnic province is home to compact communities of varying ethnic backgrounds such as han, miao, buyei, dong, yi, sui, hui, gelao, zhuang and yao. guiyang is the provincial capital.
Guizhou is a large natural park with rich resources of rocks, water bodies and caves.there are 8 national scenic resorts, such as the huangguoshu waterfall, zhijin cace,red maple lake, wuyang river, dragon palace and so on. There are 6 national famous historical and cultural cities including zunyi, zhengyuan and others, and 6 sites under state protection as key cultural relics, such as blue dragon cave and drum-tower in zengcong. In addition, guizhou holds the greatest number of china’s ethnic festivals. Statistics show that more than 1,000 minority ethnic festivals are celebrated in theis province every year. These festivals have a strong loval flavour. As the dwelling places differ, even the same ethnic groups hold festivals with different names and activities, and on different dates. A distinct landscape, unique ethnic customs and habits, and a pleasant weather have turned guizhou into an ideal tourist and holiday-making destination.
QianLing Park
As one of the biggest inner-city parks in china, qianling park is a natural forest park in guiyang with mountain and a crystal clear lake. in addition to such natural scenes as ancient trees, lakes, ponds and lotus, the park boasts may spots of historical interest. on the cliffs of the hills, there are inscriptions by ancient calligraphers. the largest inscription is the 6.2-meter-high and 2.7-meter-wide charcter “hu” (tiger) written by a calligrapher in 1860.
During
the anti-Japanese war, the famous patriotic generals like Chang
Hsueh-Liang (1901-2001) and Yang Hucheng (1892-1949) were jailed one
after another in the Shuiyue nunnery. The nunnery is now developed into a
museum. The park is also home to some 400 monkeys. The 3,900-hectare
forest park is located in the southeastern part of the city. It is
china’s earliest and largest forest park ever built in a city. in
summer, as the temperature is two degrees lower than the other parts of
the city, the park is an ideal summer resort.
HuangGuoshu Waterfall
Perhaps no other scenic spot in guizhou province is better known than huangguoshu waterfall on baishui river 15 km to the southwest of zhenning county, 137 km from guiyang. during the flood season, when the baishui river flows to huangguoshu, the fractured riverbed forces it to fall in the form of an 81-meter-wide water curtain into the xiniu(rhinoceros) pond 74 meters down below, causing an unceasing din and shooting showers of water droplets up to a height of 90 meters. The sound like ten thousand horses galloping and shaking the ground and the hill. A pavilion built on the opposite bank provides a panoramic vista of the spectacle, billed as the largest waterfall in china. The waterfall happens to form the curtain for a cave hidden behind it.
